Conflict is inevitable, but changing the culture around how to deal with conflict – including a common vocabulary – enables employees to communicate better. Productivity and employee retention increase in an environment where people communicate clearly and directly. In IMPACT’s Workplace Conflict Resolution, employees learn to deal with conflict between coworkers (lower-level, same-level, or higher-level employees of the same establishment), clients (people with whom employees have extended, continual, or very personal contact), or customers (people who may, because of limited contact, treat an employee more abusively than otherwise.) Participants learn effective body language and verbal skills to set boundaries appropriately, using strategies such as humanizing, empathizing, de-escalating, etc.
IMPACT works with many employers who are concerned about Employee Safety – whether it is because employees often work late hours and/or alone, work in high-crime areas, or work with abusive or volatile clients/customers. Learning personal safety and self-defense techniques addresses the questions that can create burnout, like, “Is it worth the risks I have to take to do this work?” or, “What can I do if this client escalates?” Fear for one’s own safety is typically the greatest barrier to helping others and an adrenaline response in reaction to anger or fear can be a major barrier to good communication. When employees learn hands-on verbal and physical safety skills, as well as adrenaline management, they have an easier time working with each other and clients/customers, and staying happy at their job.
Defining Sexual Harassment, Harassment & Bullying 101, and Cultural Sensitivity classes are often required by businesses’ Human Resources departments, and with good reason. IMPACT re-examines these issues, not simply from a liability standpoint, but with the intent that employees feel more empathetic to others and cared about themselves. These classes prevent misunderstanding and situations that can escalate. These classes look at the “big picture” of these issues, as well as set the stage for effective Workplace Conflict Resolution classes where employees learn in-the-moment skills for effectively managing problems they face in the workplace.
